CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Ihad a lot of explaining to do about Steven while the ever-helpful Lucy trotted off to fetch flashlights from the annex.

We needed to examine the hidden room properly. It was far too small for a man of Drake’s size to have shared with Steven, but there was stuff in there—stuff that might relate to Drake’s disappearance.

And honestly? It wasn’t outside the realm of possibility that a dead Dr. Drake could be tucked behind a panel somewhere.

“Please—you can’t tell anyone Steven’s here,” I said, my voice cracking. “We’d all get into trouble for harboring a fugitive. And when Farrow realizes I’ve been hiding Steven for days…and if Jamie finds out I lied to him…”

I dropped my head.

“Who’s Jamie?” Steven asked.

“Honey,” Gina said gently, patting my arm. “He’s your husband. The father of your children. You never had closure. Of course you needed some time. But you should have come to us straight away.”

“I didn’t want to get you into trouble.” My eyes burned. “You already had enough chaos. This is just…” I snapped my gaze to Steven. “The worst possible timing!”

He held up both hands. “Hey, how was I supposed to know any of this spooky stuff would be going on with your family? I’ve been watching you from afar and thought you lived in a boring English village. Opening that theater with your friend looked like peak excitement. I didn’t expect to wake up in a Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors.”

Despite everything, I laughed—and immediately hated that he could still make me do that. Even disheveled, with cobwebs in his golden highlights and dark circles under his eyes, Steven could be maddeningly charming.

I exhaled. “At least we now have a clue. This inn is hiding more than ghosts. There might be more secret rooms—we don’t know how many. Drake could be in one of them. Gina, did you know anything about this?”

My aunt shook her head. “Wouldn’t Dr. Drake have tried to draw attention to himself? Steven knocked—we would have heard something during the searches for Malcom too.”

“Unless another room is more insulated,” I said. “Better hidden.”

“Let’s be realistic,” Maggie said. “Secret rooms don’t extend into alternate dimensions. If one exists, the walls should tell us. We’d see inconsistencies.”

“That’s true.” I recalled the hidden archive in the theater—how one dressing room had been smaller, with a suspiciously newer wall. “We should check for architectural oddities.”

“Then let’s look,” Maggie said briskly. “The inn’s not that big.”

We scattered. She was right—technically it wasn’t large—but the place was a creepy rabbit warren. It was difficult to judge wall thickness or which rooms adjoined which. Some doors were still locked.

“You really need keys for these, Gina,” I said, frustrated, as we reconvened in the corridor just as Lucy returned with flashlights. “We should mark rooms we’ve searched so we don’t double back.”

“Like breadcrumbs?” Steven offered, eyebrow raised.

“I—don’t know.”

A thought tugged at me. Seeing Maggie in the inn window the other night…the tale of Glamis Castle bubbled up from memory.

“There’s a legend,” I told them. “The owners suspected a secret room in the castle.
